On May 10 and 11, 2023, WTZ e.V. in cooperation with Helmholtz Centre Potsdam German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) will be hosting a digital international workshop on "Gas Hydrates in Permafrost Regions".
On the first day of the workshop, gas hydrate deposits in permafrost areas will be examined: In addition to the preconditions for gas hydrate formation, the effects of global warming on gas hydrates within and below terrestrial permafrost will be investigated, as well as in marine environments. The decomposition of gas hydrates will be discussed in particular with respect to time scales.
On the following day, the participants will examine the influence of ice and methane hydrate on the shear strength of permafrost soils, but also evaluate the expected amounts of climate-active gases that may be released into the atmosphere by the decomposition of gas hydrates in permafrost regions. In this context, the mutual influence of methane gas from hydrates with microbial activities will also be included in the discussion.
