German-Algerian Seminar on Hydrogen Infrastructure And Its Challenges

On October 25 - 26, 2022, WTZ e.V. together with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH organized a German-Algerian seminar on hydrogen infrastructure and its challenges as a partial event of an Algerian delegation trip in the framework of the German-Algerian Energy Partnership and the International Hydrogen Ramp-up Program.

The development of a hydrogen economy is considered a key task of the German government in the energy sector. The goal of climate neutrality by 2045 is of great importance in this context. Since the amount of hydrogen potentially produced in Germany would not be sufficient according to the industry's needs forecast in the National Hydrogen Strategy, Germany will have to import hydrogen in large quantities. Algeria could become an important H2 exporter in this process. In the current program of the Algerian government, the development of a green hydrogen economy is also defined as a priority.

Against this background, the seminar discussed concrete scientific-technical challenges in transportation and storage infrastructure, as well as production of green hydrogen and material science aspects. It was also examined how these challenges can be solved and how the establishment of a concrete hydrogen cooperation can be technically implemented.

The seminar concluded with a visit to the Hydrogen Lab Leuna, an electrolysis test platform at the Leuna chemical site, where innovative technologies for the production of “green” hydrogen and its use in sustainable synthesis processes are combined with an infrastructure of gas pipelines and gas storage facilities.

The Algerian delegation consisted of representatives of the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mining and the Algerian state energy company Sonatrach. From the German side, institutions and organizations from science and industry were involved. The event was moderated by Prof. Dr. Hartmut Krause (WTZ e.V.) and Frank Renken and Jürgen Stefan Kukuk (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH).
