Project BilHyNet: Establishment of a German-Russian Scientific-Technical Hydrogen Network

The BilHyNet project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), was intended to create a network to expand scientific-technical cooperation relations between German and Russian researchers in the field of hydrogen. Due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the project has been discontinued.

Against the background of increasing international efforts for decarbonization and a predicted high demand for hydrogen imports in Germany, the "BilHyNet" project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (original project duration was September 2021 - August 2023) aimed at a sustainable topic-centred networking of German and Russian scientists within the framework of hydrogen cooperation with the selective involvement of relevant companies. For this purpose, a scientific-technical dialog and communication platform was to be established. The long-term goal of the project was to contribute to the German-Russian energy partnership with the objective of achieving a climate-neutral future.

The members of the network were to inform each other about current research developments, improve understanding of each other's perspectives and derive joint insights into research needs and cooperation opportunities. The exchange should have helped to develop the basis for bilateral scientific-technical pilot projects in the field of production, transport and use of (especially climate-neutral) hydrogen. As a result of the project, a roadmap for joint research needs across the hydrogen value chain should have been developed.

Within the project activities two network meetings were held. At the first meeting, German and Russian scientists got to know each other and their research activities in the field of hydrogen technologies, and an initial exchange about (at that time) potential topics for joint research took place. At the second network meeting, the research approaches / research topics for the bilateral collaborations that were considered possible at that time were concretized and a new format for structuring the network in the form of theme groups was created.

In the context of the German-Russian Hydrogen Conference on December 08, 2022, which brought together more than 30 speakers and about 600 participants, the research topics around hydrogen were approached in more detail. The first panel addressed the current state of development of the hydrogen economy in Germany and Russia, as well as the current need for research. The second panel addressed the scientific challenges in the transport and storage infrastructure in the context of the German-Russian hydrogen partnership. Hydrogen application in the industrial sector was another topic. More information and the detailed program of the conference can be found here (in German or Russian).

Due to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, the basis for the networks’ activities in the German-Russian context was withdrawn and concrete approaches for joint research is no longer to be elaborated and pursued. The project was discontinued in March 2022 as a result of the stop of the cooperation with the Russian Federation announced by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
